Week beginning 25.01.16

Our new topic in maths this week was shape. The children learnt how to draw, measure and classify angles. They also learnt how to identify and draw perpendicular and parallel lines. Today they were using a mirror to draw symmetrical 2D shapes. They have been set some homework on abacus which must be completed by Tuesday. Next week in class we will be looking at mental and written multiplication and division, and applying these in the context of word problems.

We have begun PSHE lessons this term and our topic for this half term is 'dreams and goals'. The children showed maturity when discussing times when their hopes hadn't been fufilled and their dreams for the future. This week the children were put into groups and set a challenge, to design a garden ornament which they could sell at a fete. They had to take into account the cost of the product, their target audience and it's function. They will present their ideas to myself and Mrs Warrington next week.

In English we have continued to study the first book from the Spiderwick Chronicles, 'The Field Guide'. I know how much the children are enjoying this book with many buying other books in the series and watching the film at home. Today they wrote a letter to the authors telling them what they had enjoyed most about the book. Next week the children will be planning, drafting and writing their own story in the style of the Spiderwick Chronicles.

week beginning 18.01.16

We had a very enjoyable trip to the library this Tuesday. The children were told all about the wide range of books available to them. They were then shown how to find and take out books, then given the opportunity to hire a book of their choice. For those children who are not yet a member of the Hertfordshire library I have given them membership forms if they wish to join. This will give them access to all librarys in Hertfordshire. Thanks again to those parents who accompanied us on a very successful trip.

On Thursday we welcomed Father Michael into our class who talked to the children about their current RE topic communities. As always he was engaging, informative and fun and the children learnt lots about the local parish.

We have even more visits to look forward too next week! On Monday a theatre company are coming in to perform a version of Robin Hood.

week beginning 11.01.16

It has been a very busy start to the New Year and the Spring Term!

On Tuesday the Mayor came into our class and the children had the opportunity to ask him some questions. He told us the roles and responsibilities that come with being Mayor and about the relocation of the St Albans Museum.

On Wednesday the author Luke Temple came to visit and captivated the children with the retellings of his books.

His visit proved very popular with the children and the following day he came back into school to sign books for those children who wished to purchase one.

On Friday we had another visitor in school-Father Michael came to talk to the children about the Year Of Mercy and blessed our Door Of Mercy which was created by the children.

The children have been enthused by the book The Spiderwick Chronicles for our new English topic. They have enjoyed recreated some scenes from the book using role play and freeze frame.

They are also enjoying our new topic The Tudors. In PE they have been composing their own Tudor dances.

Just some reminders for this week (w/c 18.01.16):
The children will be visiting Harpenden library on Tuesday. If they have a library card and would like to take out a book they must bring this with them.
Could the children please bring in a piece of fruit for Art on Wednesday
